Will my firewall prevent me from installing or AutoUpdating Epocrates?
What are the signs that Epocrates is being blocked by my firewall?
How do I AutoUpdate (sync) through a firewall?
How can I change my firewall settings to enable me to download Epocrates software?
Answer
If you are installing Epocrates for the first time and a connection to our server cannot be established, it may be because your computer is behind a firewall. Firewalls increase the security on your PC but can also prevent you from being able to receive vital information from our AutoUpdate server.
You might be behind a firewall if you receive any error message regarding Epocrates being unable to connect to the server, invalid username and/or password busy server, or heavy volume. Numeric error messages for Palm include (but are not limited to) error 5455, 5477, 5486 and 5491. Windows Mobile (Pocket PC) users might see an error 13 or an error 87.
Sometimes users who update experience a removal of old Epocrates files but when our server tries to install the new files to the handheld, the firewall blocks the transfer and they are left with no Epocrates on their device. If Epocrates has seemed to "disappear" from your handheld, a firewall may be the culprit.
If you encounter a prompt from your firewall while installing Epocrates, please respond to the prompt in such a way that will grant Internet access. If that doesn't help, we suggest disabling your firewall. You can also configure your firewall to accept traffic to and from our server's IP address if you do not want to completely turn it off. Our AutoUpdate server's IP address is 63.241.66.139. All traffic from our server comes from port 80. If you do not know how to configure or turn off the firewall, please contact your firewall provider's support department for instructions. If you are behind a Network firewall at your place of employment or school, please contact your company's IT department or Helpdesk.
We have put together instructions on how to configure the following firewall products:
These are just a few of the many security programs available for users to install, so even if yours is not listed, if you are connected to the Internet and have any software that monitors and restricts Internet traffic, please try disabling the program and then syncing again. Note: Most anti-virus software programs will not cause problems with AutoUpdate so you do not need to disable your anti-virus software.
