How do I fix the "Conduit Manager unexpectedly quit" error?
Answer
This is a known issue affecting some Macintosh users. The work-arounds for this issue involve either installing and updating Epocrates wirelessly (if your device has this ability) or going back to a previous version of Epocrates. If it is necessary to "roll back" Epocrates, you will lose the following features:
OTC drug information
Epocrates Tables
Epocrates Homepage (the "my" tab)
Memory Card support
Rx: Black Box warnings
Rx: Safety and Monitoring Information
Rx: Pharmacology
Additionally, Epocrates Essentials Deluxe users will require either changing platforms to Windows or "downgrading" to Essentials.
Here are the various work-arounds for this issue.
If you subscribe to Epocrates Essentials Deluxe, you will need to either get a pro-rated refund and "downgrade" to Essentials, or you can have your license transferred from Palm/Mac to Palm/Win. Please contact Epocrates support for details.
If your device has wireless Internet capabilities, you could install and update Epocrates wirelessly. To do this, open the web browser on the handheld and direct it to the following web address.
http://get.epocrates.com
Please note that the prefix "www." is NOT part of the above web address. Then, select the "Install Now" button and continue with the wireless install process.
If you do not have a data plan, your carrier will charge you for the download and update time.
Another option is to "downgrade" Epocrates from Rx version 8 to version 7.5. Please CLICK HERE to see the process necessary to do this.
If downgrading from Rx version 8 to version 7.5 is unacceptable and a wireless install is not an option, it will be necessary to transfer your license from Palm/Mac to Palm/Win. Please contact Epocrates support for details.
Downgrade Epocrates
The following process will correct the "Conduit Manager unexpectedly quit" error by downgrading Epocrates to Rx version 7.5.
A. Delete old Installers.
Navigate to your 'Downloads' folder on your Mac. Generally this is located under your Mac's username directory.
Delete any EpocratesMac or Epocrates files in this folder. If you cannot locate the Downloads folder, open the Finder and search for: EpocratesMac.
B. Delete old Epocrates files on your Palm.
On your Palm, navigate to your home screen. This should show you all the different icons of your installed applications.
Tap on the time located in the upper left hand corner of your screen and tap on the 'Delete' menu option. If you do not see Delete, tap on your home button once. Then repeat this step.
Locate and delete the following files:
AutoUpdate
epExpansionAcces
Any file starting with "ePocrates" or "Epocrates"
libaupd
OnBoardAU
Package Installer
Tap on Done.
C. Delete Epocrates files from your Mac.
First, if there are any EpocratesMac.hqx or EpocratesMac VISE files on your Mac, delete them.
Navigate to the "Applications" folder, and delete the "Epocrates AutoUpdate" folder.
Open the Mac HD and navigate to the following folder.
Users/[your Mac username]/Library/Application Support/Palm
Hotsync/Conduits/
Delete the following files.
ePocrates_AutoUpdate
EpocratesPostSync
ePocratesPrep
Open the Mac HD and navigate to the following folder. (This folder is similar to the one in step #3, but is actually a different location)
Use this new EpocratesMac file to re-install the Epocrates product on your Palm device.
Please note: For .zip files Mac has a new program to replace the one that comes with their OS. Here is a link to the latest unzipper that is free from Mac's website:
Once the AutoUpdate completes and Epocrates is operational on your Palm device, open the Mac HD and in the upper right search box enter: epocratesprep. Delete any file that shows up in the search results and empty the trash. Please note: it might be necessary to hold down the "option" key on the keyboard while emptying the trash.
